Bill Clinton Stumps for Mike Michaud in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine — Former President Bill Clinton says Democrat Mike Michaud is what Maine needs in a governor to bring people together, contrasting the Democratic hopeful's style with that of incumbent Gov. Paul LePage.

"Ideology gets in your way and makes you do dumb things," Clinton said of LePage.

Before a Portland crowd of about 1,600 last night, Clinton painted Republican LePage as a divisive figure who has chosen conflict over cooperation.

Michaud himself also attacked LePage's record repeatedly during a 20-minute speech, saying that whether the issues in Maine were health care, education, municipal revenue sharing or job creation, the governor's style dooms any attempt for improvements.

"LePage will never be able to fix these problems," Michaud said.

With two months to go for Election Day, campaigns are now kicking into high gear with public appearances and a blitz of TV ads.

Michaud is in a tight three-way race with LePage and independent candidate Eliot Cutler.
