PORTLAND, Maine - Independent candidate for governor Eliot Cutler says he's staying in the race, but told his supporters this morning that if they no longer think he can win, they should vote for someone else.
"I'm a realist," Cutler said at a Portland news conference. Cutler's message echoed what he's said all along during the campaign, but the timing, just six days before the election, has a stronger implication.
Polls have consistently shown Cutler a distant third behind Republican incumbent Paul LePage and Democrat Mike Michaud. One poll this week appeared to show Cutler sinking in popularity with some of his support going to Michaud.
