BANGOR, Maine — The former deputy postmaster at the East Vassalboro Post Office has pleaded guilty to stealing mail and embezzling postal money orders.
The Morning Sentinel reports that Jason Stockmar, of Augusta, was freed on bail Monday after pleading guilty in U.S. District Court in Bangor. He will be sentenced at a later date.
Federal prosecutors say in February 2013 the 28-year-old Stockmar took 20 blank postal service money orders from a safe in the East Vassalboro office, imprinted the money orders for almost $20,000 and ordered gold bars from a company. Stockmar ordered the bars in the name of a postal clerk in the North Vassalboro Post Office without her knowledge.
Authorities say he also stole cash, checks and gift cards from mail in amounts from $50 to $600.
