Health Officials Seek Cause of Sudden Illness in Portland Students

PORTLAND, Maine - Portland health officials and the Maine Center for Disease Control are trying to find out what caused 22 students to fall ill on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 10.

The students went to the school nurse's office with a sudden onset of stomach illness and vomiting. Most of the students recovered within hours.

State and city health inspectors examined the Portland public school system's central kitchen, as well as the kitchen at the Reiche School.

The central kitchen had no violations, but at Reiche, inspectors found four, which have since been corrected. In a January inspection, the school had no violations.
