Maine Personal Income Rate Grew In 2017

Mainers' personal income grew 3.7 percent in 2017, the latest full-year for which figures are available.

The federal Bureau of Economic Analysis released the figures Thursday. The Bureau said the gain in personal income in 2017 was bigger than in 2016, when it grew 2.6 percent.

The government figures also broke down the increases by county. Cumberland County had the fastest rise in personal income at 4.3 percent. Washington County had the slowest grown, just 1.2 percent.

Mainers' personal income growth was ahead of Vermont's and Connecticut's and equaled the increase in Massachusetts. Maine trailed Rhode Island and New Hampshire, which led the region with a 4.5 percent increase in personal income last year.

Nationally, personal income grew faster in cities than in more rural areas. A similar effect is visible in the Maine numbers: Both Portland-South Portland, up 4.1 percent, and Lewiston-Auburn, up 3.9 percent, saw personal income rise faster than the statewide average. Bangor was the only urban area in the state with slower-than average growth in personal income: 3.2 percent.

If you divide the state's personal income by its population you get the population, per capita, which was $46,455 in 2017.
