Maine Town Didn't Check Record Of Driver Involved In Crash

A Maine town says it failed to check the driving record of a 21-year-old man who crashed a van of children.

The town of Kittery released Friday an internal probe blaming the oversight on miscommunication among town staff about who was responsible for checking such records.

Police cited summer camp employee John E. Guy twice for driving to endanger; twice for speeding; three times for driving with a suspended license; and twice for failing to have a valid inspection sticker.

Police say 11 children and two counselors were aboard when the driver crashed into a tree August off Interstate 95 in Greenland, New Hampshire. The driver and others injured have since been released from hospitals.

Guy was placed on leave.

The Associated Press couldn't locate a phone number for Guy.
