Maine's Salmon Aquaculture

Ten years ago, it was in rough shape but now, it has rebounded. What's different? Hear a discussion of the latest research into salmon aquaculture, find out what consumers should know about farmed salmon and we'll address concerns about sea lice and the impact of aquaculture on the wild salmon population.

Between disease, environmental concerns and economic issues, Maine's salmon fishery tanked a decade ago, and the harvest plummeted. But today the story is very different. Salmon, all of it farmed, is now Maine's second most valuable seafood, behind lobster. One company now runs all of the salmon farming operations in Maine. Learn more about salmon aquaculture in Maine, how the industry turned itself around, whether the old concerns about farmed salmon still persist and what the potential is for the industry in the future. Is farmed salmon one of the best answers to overfishing and feeding the world, or is it too problematic environmentally?

Host Jennifer Rooks speaks with:

Sebastian Belle: Director, Maine Aquaculture Association

Andrew Goode: Vice President, U.S. Operations, Atlantic Salmon Federation

Paul Anderson: Director, Aquaculture Research Institute at UMaine (and Director of SeaGrant)

Andrew Lively with True North Salmon
