The New England governors and eastern Canadian premiers who met in Vermont yesterday are calling for a “truce” in the trade war.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy says a dialing-back of rhetoric wouldn’t hurt either.
“We should not speak to our counterparts as premiers, or, the heads of federal governments the way that those conversations have played themselves out by tweet. It makes no sense at all. It is, at best, childish,” he says.
Trump has called Trudeau “weak and dishonest.” Trump’s administration has been renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement, but Trump recently said his negotiators are making progress with Mexico and said, “Canada must wait.”
Maine Gov. Paul LePage skipped the governors-premiers meeting.
