Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling has joined the "Climate Mayors" network in support of the Paris accord.
The coalition is made up of more than 200 U.S. mayors and seeks to lead a grassroots effort to reduce greenhouse gases.
Strimling says climate change has been a priority for him. So, when he saw the coalition existed, he immediately wanted to sign up.
"Of all the issues that I work on, it is one of the most unifying among people that this is something we have to confront, recognizing the United States as needing to be a leader," Strimling says. "So putting out of the Paris accord can do nothing but harm our standing in the world and harm our planet in the long term."
In his State of the City address, Strimling set a goal for Portland to have clean energy by 2040.
