Maine Gov. Paul LePage speaks at a town hall meeting, Wednesday, March 8, 2017, in Yarmouth, Maine.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage has a new reason to consider running for the Senate next year:  The Washington Post is reporting that President Trump has said he wants LePage to challenge Independent Sen. Angus King.

Trump has reportedly has sent word that if LePage decides to run, he'll win the president's endorsement. There's been no response yet from the governor or Sen. King.  King caucuses with Democrats.

Republican state Sen. Eric Brakey, who has said he will run against King, tells today's Portland Press Herald he's "not distracted by Washington gossip."

LePage has said he's not running.  But the Post is reporting Trump aides have sent word the president wants LePage to enter the race.
