Smyrna Man Shot By Maine State Trooper in Oakfield

Updated 1:54 p.m.

Police have identified the man who was shot by a state trooper Friday in the Aroostook County town of Oakfield. 54-year-old John Corneil of Smyrna was shot by Sgt. Chad Fuller, a 20-year veteran of the State Police.

According to a post from the Maine State Police, “the shooting took place outside the Oakfield Thriftway store on Ridge Road, just after 11 a.m. A team of three State Troopers had gone to the store to arrest the man, as part of an ongoing investigation, and there was an armed confrontation with the man and one of the troopers outside the store.”

Authorities say Corneil challenged troopers with a handgun, which was later determined to be a pellet gun.

Corneil was initially treated at Houlton Regional Hospital for gunshot wounds before being transferred to the Bangor hospital for surgery. His condition is not known. No officers were injured.

Per protocol, the Maine Attorney General’s Office will investigate the incident. Fuller has been placed on administrative leave with pay as the incident is investigated.
