Soldier Injured in Afghanistan Explosion Shares His Story

https://www.travismills.org/

While serving his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills was gravely injured in an IED explosion. He’s one of only five Afghan and Iraq war vets to survive a quadruple amputation.

Mills’ experience is chronicled in a New York Times bestselling memoir, “Tough as They Come.” But his story continues with efforts to assist other wounded — or as he puts it, “recalibrated,” veterans — through his foundation in Hallowell.

Mills, who shared his story on Maine Calling, recalls telling a medic right after the explosion that he couldn’t be saved and to work on other wounded soldiers. But the medic kept him alive.

Mills, the guest on Wednesday’s Maine Calling program, is the moving force behind the Maine Chance Lodge & Retreat. Located at the former estate of cosmetics pioneer Elizabeth Arden in the Belgrade Lakes region, the retreat will begin hosting combat-injured veterans and their families next summer.  Click hereto listen to entire Maine Calling interview with Travis.
