UMaine-Machias President to Resign in December

MACHIAS, Maine — University of Maine officials say the president of the system's Machias campus will resign at the end of December.

President Cynthia Huggins became the university's president in 2005 after joining the faculty as an assistant English professor eight years prior. University officials say she announced her intent to retire during a "Welcome Back" breakfast event for university employees on Thursday.

UMaine officials say Huggins intends to join an editing business owned by her partner, Laurel Robinson. She also intends to finish writing a book she set aside nine years ago.

University of Maine System Chancellor James H. Page says he will work with Huggins over the coming months to develop a new leadership plan for the school.
