USM Professor: David Bowie Among 'Great, Seminal Figures in Rock Music'
PORTLAND, Maine — Many people know David Bowie mainly as a pop musician who's had some huge, iconic hits.
But for his avid fans, and for a growing legion of academics, Bowie is much more.
They argue that Bowie's not just a musician; his work, live performance, videos, costumes and overall persona should be studied as texts, like those of any other artist or writer.
University of Southern Maine English professor Shelton Waldrep is one of those academics — he teaches a course called "The Phenomenology of Performance: David Bowie," and his new book is "Future Nostalgia: Performing David Bowie."
