AUGUSTA, Maine - Gov. Paul LePage is planning to introduce a bill that he says would ensure Maine conforms to federal tax law.
The Republican governor said Wednesday that the state has to update its tax law because President Barack Obama recently signed a bill extending several tax breaks through the end of 2014. The tax relief provisions had initially expired last year.
LePage says that the tax breaks and credits are important in helping employers create jobs. He says that among them is an above-the-line deduction for as much as $250 in teacher expenses and a deduction for higher education.
Lawmakers will consider the bill after they return to Augusta in January.
