Gorham Manufacturer Wins Contract for Radar Systems

GORHAM, Maine - A Gorham-based manufacturing business has won a $97,000 contract to design and develop wave guide devices for the operation of radar systems in heavy aircraft, such as those used by the U.S. military.

Mega Industries was awarded the Lockheed Martin contract through a competitive bid process.

William Sanborn, vice president of international sales and business development, says the new systems being designed will allow those aircraft to operate better in more severe environments. "We were able to offer both price and performance," he says, "and, of course, we had the track record to be able to back that up."

Mega Industries has made and exported components for the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, a large free electron laser in Germany, and a project in Michigan to create a linear excellerator. The company is also bidding on a project to make components for the world's largest neutron system, located in Sweden.

Sanborn says people are often surprised to realize that Maine is regarded as a major player in this type of technology development. Mega Industries has 48 full time employees, and has recently expanded its facility in Gorham.

Delivery on the current project to Lockheed Martin is set for sometime in the second quarter of 2015.
