Portland Residents Object to Waterfront Project

PORTLAND, Maine - Some residents of Maine's largest city say they oppose a planned redevelopment that could transform Portland's waterfront.

The Portland Press Herald reports that more than 50 people attended a Portland City Council meeting on Monday night about a developer's request for a zone change for the former Portland Co. complex.

The residents wore bright red stickers saying "No Blank Check, Support Responsible Development'' despite the fact that no public comment was taken. The rezone would allow for taller buildings.

City officials say they envision the Portland Co. site as a mixed-use zone. Tentative uses include a market similar to Boston's Faneuil Hall, restaurants and space for artists.

City Councilor Jon Hinck says the project is a "fairly substantial opportunity for the city of Portland and obviously it's worrisome to some people.''
