PORTLAND, Maine - New census data show that Maine household earnings were significantly higher in 2014 - but still below the national average.
The Pine Tree State ranked 33rd in the nation for median household income last year, with the typical Maine household earning $49,462. That compares to the U.S. median household income of more than $53,500 dollars.
In 2013, Maine ranked 36th in the country, with median household earnings just shy of $47,000.
The Census Bureau also released poverty rankings for 2014, which show Maine's rate more or less unchanged, with about 14 percent of the population living below the poverty line, compared with a national average of nearly 16 percent.
