Quebec Premier Cites Hydro-Power Benefits at Boston Conference

BOSTON, Mass. - Maine Gov. Paul LePage and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard are in Boston today to talk energy.

Both are keynote speakers at the U.S.-Canada Energy Trade Conference.  The theme of the conference is integrating infrastructure in a high-cost region.

Couillard told WBUR in Boston that strong incentives exist for Quebec to increase its market share in New England through Quebec Hydro. And he says hydro can exist side by side with other types of renewable power.

"Alternatives, in terms of renewable energy like wind and solar power, do not have the stability and the productivity of hydro-electricity, which should not be viewed, by the way, as a competition to these two sources of renewable energy but as a complement, bringing much more stability and reliability in the energy portfolio of new England," Couillard says.

Also on the table for discussion at the conference are proposals for new natural gas pipelines in New England.

WBUR contributed reporting to this story.
