New Destroyers Will Boost Navy's Ballistic Missile Defense

The latest destroyer that is now under construction in Maine is going to provide a boost to the Navy's ballistic missile defense capabilities.

Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are the workhorse of the Navy and the latest version features a new radar and fire control system to battle threats from the air and ballistic missiles at the same time.

Bath Iron Works began construction last week on its first Flight III destroyer which bears the name of Marine Gen. Louis Hugh Wilson Jr., a Medal of Honor recipient.

The Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi started construction on one of the ships in 2018.
