Bethel Rape Suspect Pleads Guilty, Avoids Prison

AUBURN, Maine — A man whose rape conviction was overturned by the state's highest court has avoided additional prison time by pleading guilty before his retrial.

Spencer Glover was sentenced Wednesday in Androscoggin County Superior Court to 10 years in prison with all but 20 months suspended, but was given credit for the 20 months he has already served.

The 32-year-old Glover's lawyer told the Sun Journal his client agreed to the plea deal because he didn't want to risk additional prison time.

Glover was convicted originally in July 2012. Prosecutors say he took advantage of a woman who had been drinking at his Bethel home and raped her in her sleep.

Glover said the sex was consensual.

The Supreme Judicial Court vacated the sentence in March, saying his rights had been violated.
