AUGUSTA, Maine - Police say a Maine man who spent 17 years in prison for raping and strangling a 14-year-old girl is back in custody after allegedly attacking a woman in Augusta.
Police said 45-year-old Lorne Sherwood was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault, terrorizing and creating a police standoff. Deputy Police Chief Jared Mills said an arrest warrant was obtained after a woman reported that he'd tried to sexually assault her on Monday.
Mills said Sherwood was uncooperative Monday night and that an officer was stationed outside his home. He said Sherwood did not resist arrest on Tuesday.
Sherwood was living in Biddeford at the time of the 1995 abduction, rape and beating of a girl whom he grabbed off the street at random. He pleaded guilty to a dozen charges.
