Money Intended for Foundation that Aids Veterans Stolen

AUGUSTA, Maine — Police are investigating a break-in at the Augusta Elks Lodge in which more than $15,000 was stolen, including thousands earmarked for a fundraiser for the Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit that supports injured veterans.

Lt. Christopher Massey says burglars broke into the lodge Monday night or Tuesday morning. The burglary was reported around 5:40 a.m. Tuesday by a cleaning person.

Christine Toriello, executive director of the Travis Mills Foundation, said a portion of the stolen money had been set aside to run a fundraiser for the foundation this summer.

The foundation is named for retired Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, a Manchester resident who lost parts of all four limbs in Afghanistan in 2012.

Gary Cooper, chairman of the lodge's board of directors, hopes the losses will be covered by insurance.
