AUGUSTA, Maine — The formation of the state's new cold case unit will take a bit longer than anticipated.
Staffing for the new unit was meant to be complete this week, but according to Maine State Police Chief Col. Robert Williams, more time is needed to construct the unit.
The unsolved homicide unit will consist of two new detectives to be hired in December, a chemist at the state police crime lab, and an assistant attorney general.
The delay also allows for the appointment of a new lieutenant, to be selected in November, who will oversee homicide investigations in Central Maine, as well as the new cold case unit.
Two cases on which work has already begun in recent weeks include searches for evidence regarding the 1986 disappearance of Kimberly Moreau in Jay, and the 1980 murder of teenager Joyce McLain in Millinocket.
