Cattlemen's College To Feature Low-Stress Cattle Handling

BANGOR, Maine - Some experts who plan to attend the upcoming Cattlemen's College in Maine say hooting and hollering cowboys may be a thing of the past.The Bangor Daily News reports low-stress stockmanship will be the focus of the first live demonstration at the event.
 
State livestock specialist Colt Knight says yelling or swinging sticks at the animals creates stress, which can lower their meat quality.
 
Knight says low-stress stockmanship can be more efficient by simply moving the animals around based on their instincts.
 
The event is organized by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, along with the state Beef Producers Association.
 
National Cattlemen's Beef Association trainer Dean Fish is this year's keynote speaker, and he will lead the live demonstration.
 
The event takes place Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
