Portland Health Clinic Wins $5M Federal Grant

PORTLAND, Maine - A health center in Portland that treats some of the city's most vulnerable will receive a federal grant of nearly $5 million.

Leslie Clark, CEO of Portland Community Health Center, says the clinic treated more than 1,500 homeless and at-risk patients last year.

"Most of the people who are homeless have no ability to pay," Clark says, "and many of our other patients, even though they may not be homeless, are unable to pay either."

The competitive award from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration will be doled out over three years to support the cost of providing care.

The award was announced today by Maine's U.S. senators, Susan Collins and Angus King.
