Man Rescued After Falling About 20 Feet off Mount Katahdin Trail

BAXTER STATE PARK, Maine — A 60-year-old-man has been rescued after suffering possible head and spine injuries while hiking at Baxter State Park.

The Maine Army National Guard said their soldiers evacuated the man from the park by helicopter on Sunday.

Officials said he had been with friends on Dudley Trail at Mount Katahdin when he fell about 20 feet.

The soldiers were unable to land the helicopter where he had fallen, so they lowered the medic to the ground to care for the injured man. He was taken down the mountain where he was then hoisted up to the helicopter.

National Guard officials said the man was kept in stable condition and was admitted to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment.
