Girl Dies After Being Found Unresponsive in Pool

MINOT, Maine — Officials say a 5-year-old girl who was taken to a Portland hospital after being found unresponsive at the bottom of a swimming pool has died.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Department said Abigail Rodrigue died Saturday at the Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, where she'd been in critical condition.

Police say the girl, who couldn't swim, was one of eight or nine children in the swimming pool that was supervised by two adults in the town of Minot. The girl was playing in shallow water but somehow ended up in water over her head Thursday evening.

The child was given CPR but was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived.

The incident remains under investigation but police described the death as an accident.
