Dad Pleads Not Guilty to Assaulting Infant Twins

ALFRED, Maine (AP) _ A Maine man accused of assaulting his infant twins has pleaded not guilty.

Twenty-two-year-old Anthony Carpinelli of Sanford on Friday denied charges of aggravated assault, aggravated assault with indifference, two counts of assault on a child younger than 6, and two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

He's being held on $25,000 cash bail.

The infants, who were born prematurely in March, were less than two months old when police say Carpinelli hit and shook them in May.

They were hospitalized, one with serious brain injuries and in critical condition. A hospital spokeswoman told the Portland Press Herald  that both babies have been released.
