HARPSWELL, Maine — The auction of a historic lighthouse in Casco Bay off of Harpswell is set to draw to a close.
The federal government is auctioning the Halfway Rock Light Station. The auction is set to close at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, but could be extended. Bidders were offering more than $50,000 for the lighthouse.
Built in 1871, the lighthouse is an active aid to navigation. It sits on a two-acre rock ledge off Bailey Island and is named Halfway Rock because it is halfway between Cape Elizabeth and Cape Small. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.
A spokesman for the federal General Services Administration says about a dozen bidders toured the interior of the lighthouse and the island on which it sits last week.
