Maine Meats Company Issues Beef Recall

Michael C. Berch

GREENE, Maine_ A Maine meat company based in Greene is recalling about 25,192 pounds of improperly processed beef products which were sold in several stores throughout Southern Maine.

Upon reviewing slaughter logs from Bubier Meats, the Maine Meat and Poultry Inspection program (MMPI) discovered that the dorsal root ganglia, which is part of the nervous system located in the vertebral column, may not have been completely removed during processing.

According to MMPI, such tissues can carry the infective agents that cause Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), better known as Mad Cow Disease. While very rare, humans can develop the fatal disease from eating infected meats. Unlike bacteria, the agents that cause BSE, known as prions, are not affected by cooking.

BSE has no known cure.

The products were shipped to Rosemont Market locations in Portland and Yarmouth, and Maine Meat in Kittery, between  November of 2013 and August this year.

A notice issued by MMPI on Friday advises that all products would have been processed into smaller cuts, including roasts, steaks, and neck bones, and would bear no consumer  branding on the packages.

There have been no reports of illness, and all animals used in the products appeared to be healthy, according to the inspection program.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Bubier Meats 207-946-5015.
