With the initial session of this year's hunt coming to a close tomorrow, state officials are making another plea for hunters to donate a portion of the meat they bag. The Hunters for the Hungry program collects moose, bear, and deer meat for soup kitchens around the state.
Jason Hall, who runs the program says that even a half or quarter of a moose can feed a whole soup kitchen full of people. "you know, everyone working together from the donation to the end product is very important," he says.
The program currently nets between 5,000 and 6,000 pounds of meat in a season, up from about 1,500 pounds five years ago. Moose season opened this past Monday in eight of Maine's 29 wildlife management districts. The next session is set for mid-October.
