Maine Panel on Helping Disabled Live Independently Starts Work

AUGUSTA, Maine - For the first time since 1985, Maine lawmakers are taking a comprehensive look at programs for disabled Mainers, with an emphasis on helping them live independently.

Rep. Matt Peterson, a Rumford Democrat, sponsored the legislation creating the state Commission on Independent Living and Disability, and he co-chairs the group.

"Technology, architecture, personal assistants - these are the major barriers and the ones we hope to tackle with some really specific initiatives," Peterson says.

The commission includes lawmakers, disability rights advocates, state officials and members of the public who have experience living with disabilities.

The panel plans to meet three more times in October and November, and is expected to submit recommendations to the new Legislature that convenes in December.
