Maine Civil War Soldier Gets New Headstone

SCARBOROUGH, Maine - A Maine Civil War soldier has a new grave, thanks to the actions of one of his descendants.

The great, great, great grandson of Cpl. Henry Farr learned about his relative through researching genealogy records. WLBZ-TVreports Mike Waters of Windham learned Farr died fighting for the Union Army in the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia on Oct. 19, 1864. Records informed Waters that Farr was buried on a plot of land in Scarborough.

Waters learned that the plot of land was a small cemetery in a residential neighborhood were thieves robbed headstones about 35 years ago. Waters contacted veterans affairs officials and got Farr a new one.

Waters and his family held a small service at the cemetery on Sunday, the 150th anniversary of Farr's death.
