Woman Saved After Driving Car into Belfast Harbor

BELFAST, Maine  — A 92-year-old woman who accidentally drove down a Belfast boat ramp and into the harbor is alive thanks to the quick thinking of a couple of Good Samaritans.

Police say Eva Lenfest of Searsport drove down the ramp on Thursday at the height of a rainstorm when visibility was limited.

Bryden Burleson, an employee at Belmont Boat Works, and assistant Harbormaster Howard Whitcomb, jumped in a dinghy and pulled the woman from her fast-sinking car, which was about 90 feet from shore in 10 to 12 feet of water.

Lenfest was evaluated at the scene and was OK.

The car eventually sank but was towed from the water.
