PORTLAND, Maine - Maine's highest court says a jury was right to award $750,000 to a Romanian student who was run over by a school bus while riding a bicycle in 2010.
Monica Semian sued Ledgemere Transportation and a bus driver after her pelvis was crushed by the rear wheels of a bus. She was knocked off her bike in Ogunquit while she was living with a group of other Romanian students in Wells. She sought damages for injuries, medical expenses and suffering.
Ledgemere argued that the court erred in declining to instruct the jury about the circumstances when a cyclist must ride on the right side of a way. A Maine Supreme Judicial Court panel ruled Tuesday that the court properly instructed the jury.
