Former Maine Lawmaker Pleads Guilty to Misdemeanor Charges

AUGUSTA, Maine - A former Democratic lawmaker has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges faced after a state trooper caught him a sexual encounter in a van in a park-and-ride.

Former state Rep. Brian Jones of Freedom pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of disorderly conduct and failure to provide a correct name to law enforcement.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Jones was initially charged with indecent conduct, but that was replaced Thursday with a disorderly conduct charge.

If Jones avoids criminal trouble and follows the conditions set by the court for a year, his charges will be dismissed.

In a statement after the incident in September, Jones said he was embarrassed, blamed his behavior on alcoholism and said he was seeking medical treatment.
