HOWLAND, Maine - The attorney general's office says a Maine trooper met the legal requirement for using deadly force when he shot a man during a confrontation in the man's home.
Investigators concluded that Trooper Benjamin Campbell feared for his safety and the safety of a woman in the home when he fired at 36-year-old Dale Saucier, who survived.
The June 6 incident unfolded with the trooper being asked to check on an intoxicated Campbell, who'd told a dispatcher that he needed a hearse, not an ambulance, after consuming pills.
Investigators said Saucier became agitated and reached for a gun when emergency medical technicians arrived. Campbell fired when Saucier refused to drop the gun and ran toward the bedroom where his girlfriend was hiding. The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun.
