Bad Winter Takes Toll on New England Faith Communities

BOSTON (AP) _ Religious leaders in snowbound New England are beginning to ask themselves how their houses of worship will make ends meet after all these 'acts of God'.

Churches, synagogues and mosques report attendance is down at services, as many storms have hit around weekends. That means donations are drying up as costs for snow removal, heating and maintenance are soaring.

The bad weather has prompted religious leaders to look for creative ways to engage the faithful, from streaming sermons online, emailing scripture studies and holding free activities for families when school gets canceled.

Religious leaders say they're encouraged by what they see. Many are taking this winter of discontent to look beyond their own problems, finding ways to help the homeless, elderly and others struggling more during snowstorms.
