IRS: Mainers Owed $3.7 Million in Unclaimed Tax Refunds

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service says approximately 4,500 Maine taxpayers are owed about $3.7 million in unclaimed tax refunds from 2011.

IRS spokesman Mark Hanson says taxpayers have until April 15 to file a 2011 return and claim any outstanding refund.

"If you had a job and you had federal income taxes withheld, even if you were not required to file a return, you may want to go ahead and do so," Hanson says. "That way you can get the refund money that's rightfully yours."

Hanson says the median unclaimed Maine refund from 2011 is $645.
