External Attack Causing More Problems for Maine Govt Website

AUGUSTA, Maine - The Maine government website is being hacked for a second day, causing delays for people trying to conduct business.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said it's a continuation of Monday's "denial-of-service'' attack in which someone floods the state server with spam, causing the system to overload and crash.

He said no data is in jeopardy.

As of late Tuesday morning, the state website was up and running, but some online transactions were unavailable. Dunlap called it a "pain in the neck'' and a temporary "nuisance.''

A Twitter user claimed responsibility for the attack, but there was no way to verify the claim. The Department of Administrative and Financial Services says an investigation is underway.
