AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Kennebec County's sheriff has asked local police in the county to hold off on arrests for minor nonviolent offenses because of chronic overcrowding at the county jail.
The Kennebec Journal reports the jail already is using pretrial services and alternative sentencing but the jail population still regularly exceeds the maximum number of inmates authorized by the state.
