SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine (AP) _ An independent documentary filmmaker from Maine has survived the earthquake in Nepal, spending the night under a doorway of her Kathmandu apartment as buildings collapsed and roads cracked.
The Portland Press Herald reports that 28-year-old Alison Hudson flew in to Kathmandu just hours after filming on Mount Everest before the quake triggered an avalanche that killed at least 10 people.
She called her parents in Southwest Harbor on Saturday morning to say she was OK. Her father said her apartment building was deemed unsafe and she was staying at a hotel that opened its lobby for people displaced by the quake.
Hudson has been in Nepal since January, making a documentary on the life of Sherpa mountaineering guides. It's called ``Close to the Edge: Life in the Khumbu.''
