Former Washington County Sheriff Indicted on Theft Charges
MACHIAS, Maine - A Maine grand jury has indicted former Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith on charges stemming from an investigation into expenditures from an account benefiting inmates.
WABI-TV reported Monday that Smith was formally charged with theft by unauthorized taking, theft by misapplication of property, and misuse of entrusted property.
Authorities say the offenses took place over a period of six years.
A detective from the attorney general's office assisted in the investigation, and Washington County District Attorney Matt Foster pursued the case.
A phone number couldn't be located for Smith, who served eight years as sheriff before losing his re-election in November 2014.
