Company Looking to Produce Biogas from Trash in Brunswick

A Maine company wants to use about 180 tons of garbage to a fuel an ``anaerobic digester'' that it's building in Brunswick.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Village Green Ventures is building a $10 million digester in the Brunswick Landing business park.

Anaerobic digesters consist of massive tanks. Bacteria inside the tanks ``eat'' biological waste and convert it into methane-rich biogas, powering a turbine to create electricity. Digesters can consume most organic materials.

The Brunswick Landing digester plans to give nearby waste-management firms, sewer districts and others an affordable way to dispose waste. Company officials say it will provide power to a former naval air base and produce 40 tons of fertilizer each day.

It is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2015.
