Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck answers media questions about a woman who recanted a story that she had been sexually assaulted while walking on Portland's popular Back Cove trail.

PORTLAND, Maine - Portland Police say a woman who alleged that she was sexually assaulted on the popular Back Cove trail in broad daylight has recanted her story.

The 34-year-old woman claimed that she was walking on the trail around midday Wednesday when a 6-foot-tall man dragged her into tall grass near the half-mile marker of the trail and sexually assaulted her.

Police say the woman now acknowledges that the incident did not occur. No motive for the false claim has been determined. The woman has not been charged with any crime in connection with the incident.
