Purple Lights to Shine Spotlight on Domestic Violence in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine - A number of southern Maine police departments, cities and businesses will shine purple lights outside their buildings this month to raise awareness about domestic violence.

Portland Police Chief Mike Sauschuck helped launch the "Purple Light Nights" campaign at a kick-off event outside Portland city hall this morning.

"There's a simple fact that brings us here today  Society and the law enforcement profession were part of hiding the domestic violence plague in our country for hundreds of years," Sauschuck said. "And we've come a long way, and we still have a long way to go."

Sauschuck says his department has included a Family Crisis Services office in his department to help ensure police are part of solution moving forward.

Those who are experiencing domestic violence or know someone who may be a victim are encouraged to call a confidential hotline at 1-800-537-6066.
