WINSLOW, Maine - Town councilors have paved the way for the potential construction of a massive solar project in Winslow.
The Morning Sentinel reports that councilors on Tuesday adopted an ordinance to regulate large-scale principal solar energy systems and three amendments to existing ordinances to cover rules for noise and decommissioning solar arrays and in what development zones commercial projects would be allowed.
The ordinance is the first of its kind in Maine. It only applies to large commercial solar projects designed to feed into electricity grid.
A committee came up with the rules after Ranger Solar approached the town with a proposal to build a 10- to 12-megawatt solar station. It would cost up to $25 million and could cover 100 acres.
Company officials say they aren't ready to release a timetable.
