PORTLAND, Maine - A Portland arts committee will soon make a decision about whether a public art memorial for victims of a deadly fire will be approved despite objections from some neighborhood residents.
The sculpture would be placed in Longfellow Park, near the site of a fire that killed six people on Nov. 1, 2014. Supporters would like the installation to be in place by the anniversary.
The Portland Press Herald reports that residents in the neighborhood object to the city installing lighting in the park without public discussion. The project has been on hold while the city's ad-hoc Temporary Art Installation Committee considers it.
The committee could make a decision as soon as Friday or Monday.
The owner of the duplex that burned has been indicted on six counts of manslaughter.
