Project Seeks Recordings of Maine Veterans

AUGUSTA, Maine — Veterans from across the state joined with Gov. Paul LePage and first lady Ann LePage in kicking off the Maine Veterans Legacy project at the State House.

The project aims to record the thoughts and remembrances of Maine veterans for future generations. Bureau of Veterans Services Director Adria Horn says there has been a strong outpouring of support for the project.

"People started coming out of the woodwork and saying, 'We are already doing this. How can we help, how can we partner, how can we share in what we are collecting?'" she says.

Gov. LePage praised the effort, saying veterans really know the importance of a free society. The Veterans Legacy Project coordinates with both the state archives and the Library of Congress and its Veterans History Project to archive the living histories of veterans.

"Listen to their stories," Horn says. "Listen not just to the war story, but listen to the legacy, their reflections, how it has affected their life."
